About 84 people attended an NHHRC consultation with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Health Minister Nicola Roxon in Geraldton, Western Australia, on 2 October 2009.
People at the meeting included the Indigenous health sector, the Geraldton Regional Aboriginal medical service, hospital staff, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals as well as workers from local community services and people from the aged care sector.
Significant issues discussed included the need for increased capital funds for infrastructure, the integration of nurse practitioners into the health system, workforce issues including the GP incentive program, and training for local Aboriginal health workers and transport issues for patients in remote areas.
There was discussion regarding the need for local solutions to local issues and a number of positive examples were raised regarding how the existing health agencies have formed strong partnerships introducing improved efficiencies in the delivery of services within the mid-west region.
